Beyond Bias: Embracing Anti-Racist Practices

Erasmus+ Training Course

November 18-26, 2025

"Beyond Bias: Embracing Anti-Racist Practices" was a 7-day Erasmus+ training course designed to equip youth workers with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools to recognize, challenge, and prevent racism while promoting equality, diversity, and social inclusion in their communities.

Hosted from November 18 to 26, 2025, in Lecce, Italy, the training brought together youth workers from eight European countries for a week of experiential learning, intercultural exchange, and collaboration. Through interactive workshops, simulations, role plays, group discussions, and reflective exercises, participants explored the roots and impacts of racism, examined bias and systemic inequalities, and developed practical strategies for integrating anti-racist practices into their youth work.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • deepen participants' understanding of the roots, manifestations, and impacts of racism and bias;

  • equip youth workers with practical strategies to recognize and challenge discrimination in youth work settings;

  • strengthen participants' ability to create inclusive environments and support marginalized young people;

  • encourage youth participation in advocacy, active citizenship, and community-building initiatives;

  • build international networks and partnerships to support sustained anti-racist action;

  • develop actionable plans to integrate anti-racist policies, practices, and activities into youth organizations and local communities.

WHY ANTI-RACISM?

Racism remains a significant challenge across Europe, affecting individuals and communities through prejudice, discrimination, hate crimes, and systemic inequalities. From anti-Black racism and antisemitism to anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination against Roma communities, racism continues to undermine human rights, social cohesion, and equal opportunities.

For young people from marginalized racial and ethnic backgrounds, these experiences can have lasting consequences. Discrimination in education, employment, housing, and public services can limit opportunities, while stereotypes, microaggressions, and social exclusion can affect their well-being, sense of belonging, and participation in society. These challenges are often reinforced by institutional and structural barriers that perpetuate inequality.

Youth workers play an essential role in addressing these realities. As educators, mentors, and community leaders, they can challenge harmful stereotypes, facilitate sensitive conversations, support marginalized young people, and create inclusive environments where diversity is respected and valued. However, effective anti-racist youth work requires more than promoting tolerance or cultural awareness. It demands the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognize discrimination and actively challenge it.

Anti-racism is about more than responding to individual incidents of prejudice. It involves critically examining our own biases, understanding how power and privilege shape opportunities, and taking meaningful action to address discriminatory practices and systemic inequalities. By integrating anti-racist principles into their daily work, youth workers can empower young people, promote equal participation, and contribute to building more inclusive, equitable, and democratic communities.

ACTIVITIES

The training course used non-formal education (NFE) and experiential learning methods, placing participants at the centre of the learning process. Activities were inspired by the Council of Europe's *Compass Manual for Human Rights Education* and grounded in anti-racist pedagogy (ARP), combining critical reflection, collaboration, and practical learning to address racism at individual, institutional, and structural levels.

Participants learned through activities that:

  • encouraged active participation, self-reflection, and critical thinking;

  • responded to participants' needs, experiences, and diverse cultural backgrounds;

  • promoted cooperation, peer learning, and intercultural dialogue;

  • challenged stereotypes, unconscious biases, and discriminatory attitudes;

  • provided opportunities to practice anti-racist strategies in realistic situations;

  • connected personal awareness with collective action and organizational change.

Throughout the course, participants explored:

  • the roots, manifestations, and consequences of racism and discrimination;

  • identity, privilege, unconscious bias, and intersectionality;

  • stereotypes, prejudice, and microaggressions in everyday life;

  • power dynamics, systemic racism, and institutional barriers;

  • strategies for challenging discrimination and promoting inclusion;

  • facilitating difficult conversations about race, identity, and inequality;

  • inclusive language, active listening, and respectful communication;

  • designing inclusive youth projects and anti-racist organizational policies;

  • advocacy, storytelling, and community mobilization for social change;

  • developing sustainable anti-racist action plans and initiatives.

Practical activities included the Privilege Walk, Where Do You Stand?, Labels, Identikit Portraits, the Courageous Conversation Compass, role-playing scenarios, collaborative discussions, and exercises exploring identity, discrimination, and social inequalities. Participants also worked together to develop an Inclusive Language Guide and explored practical strategies for implementing anti-racist practices in their organizations.

By the end of the course, participants had strengthened their understanding of racism, developed practical facilitation and advocacy skills, and prepared action plans for promoting more inclusive and equitable youth work within their local communities.

DISSEMINATION

To extend the project's impact beyond the training course, ONDE, partner organizations, and participants carried out dissemination initiatives across the eight participating countries, sharing practical anti-racist tools and encouraging dialogue, reflection, and action within their communities.

These included:

  • anti-racism workshops and educational activities in schools, universities, workplaces, youth organizations, and community settings;

  • interactive exercises exploring privilege, unconscious bias, stereotypes, discrimination, and systemic racism;

  • public discussions and presentations promoting inclusion, cultural awareness, and anti-racist practices;

  • creative initiatives, including a multicultural football match encouraging solidarity and a spoken-word performance exploring identity and activism;

  • newspaper articles, radio appearances, educational presentations, and social media activities raising awareness about the project and Erasmus+ opportunities;

  • four participant interview videos and one project highlights video documenting the training experience;

  • an Inclusive Language Guide developed by participants and the "Beyond Bias: Embracing Anti-Racist Practices" Practical Guide for Youth Workers, offering educational resources and ready-to-use activities.

Participants adapted their dissemination activities to their local contexts. In Croatia, workshops and classroom activities explored privilege, stereotypes, and systemic discrimination. In Portugal, a participant facilitated discussions with public-service colleagues about discrimination against refugees and asylum seekers. In Greece, participants organized interactive workshops examining identity and unconscious bias, while in Austria, a multicultural football match brought together university students for dialogue on racism and solidarity. In Ireland, the project's messages reached wider audiences through educational activities, print media, and local radio.

Together, these initiatives helped extend the learning and resources developed during "Beyond Bias" to wider communities, encouraging youth workers and young people to challenge discrimination, promote inclusion, and put anti-racist principles into everyday practice.
